On A Roll

Allison just called to tell me that Quinn rolled herself over. Front to back. Allison put Quinn in her crib to go wash her hands when she came back Quinn was on her back. I thought this might happen soon. Last night I put Quinn in her crib one way, when I went to check on her she had rotated herself 90 degrees. I put her in her crib on her back facing this way - and when I checked on her she was facing this way |. All of this is very exciting to us.

Swadding Mov

What's the web for if it's not for sharing stuff about your baby? I've started to see a lot more baby advice pop up on the web. I don't know if this is a new thing as more tech-savey dads have babys or if it's just a "new to me" thing.

Glenn Fleishman on his blog has made a video on how to swaddle a newborn baby. I've found swaddling to be a great method of calming Quin Down. I haven't tried this method yet, but I'm probably going to try it tonight. Anyhoo, if your looking for a way to swaddle a baby (and who isn't) here it is:

Something to look forward to

I read this on a weblog, it's a bit early to be thinking about this, but I thought it was funny enough to share:

Top Five Best Things About Having a Three-Year-Old vs. a Two-Year-Old

1) Almost potty trained
2) Less fearful
3) More independent
4) Understands what we say
5) Talks more

Top Five Worst Things About Having a Three-Year-Old vs. a Two-Year-Old

On a side note, I found out yesterday that Ryan (my nephue) has started daycare. That's pretty cool.

What Quinn Can Do

Quinn doesn’t have complete control, but she can hold her head up very easily.

She is also good at sitting up, but not on her own.

If you hold her up so that her feet touch the ground, she can use her legs to hold some of her weight. It feels like she is standing. It looks like she enjoys doing this.

She swings her arms towards things that she sees, and sometimes she hits them.

She has discovered her hair, she runs her fingers through her hair. She probably does this because it’s soft. I don’t know if she realizes that it’s her head she’s running her fingers through.

She won’t sleep unless she has at least one if not both of her arms outside the blanket. She likes too have them above her head.

And best of all Quinn can smile. She’s been smiling up a storm recently.

Lazy Dads

According to Yahoo News (UK & Ireland) Dad's are lazy people. Personally I try to do my part in keeping everyone in good sleep, so does Allison. I found the best way to sleep is with Quinn on my chest. I think she likes to hear my hart beat and I don't have to get up 20 times an hour to make sure she's still breathing. Anyway, check it:

Dads sleep on as baby cries

LONDON (Reuters) - Half of fathers either continue to doze or pretend to be asleep when their babies cry during the night, making many mothers resentful, a survey released today shows.

In addition to the 52 percent of dads who do not get up with their wailing children, a further 22 percent only get up after their partner has already crawled out of bed.

The lack of support leaves six in 10 mothers feeling bitter towards their partners. Restless nights also mean 86 percent of mums prefer sleep to sex.

"It's amazing so many relationships survive the onslaught of a baby, but sadly, some never recover. And the problem is compounded because so many couples with a baby now both work and they feel ravaged with tiredness," said Elena Dalrymple, editor of Mother & Baby magazine, which carried out the survey of 2,000 parents across the country.

The research also showed that most babies are about five months old before they regularly sleep for seven hours a night and a third don't sleep through the night until they are 18 months old.

An Old Rant Revisited

I don't know how many of you will remember my good old fashioned rant. If you don't, you can always look it up in the archives here. (It's towards the bottom). I have to say experience often changes your perspective.

One of the arguments that I've heard fathers complain about is the fact that the mothers get to do all the nice comforting things like breastfeed and the fathers get to do the uncomfortable things like change the diapers. This makes the baby prefer the mothers. I have to say that I haven't experienced this at all. We've found that Quinn can smell the milk on Allison and therefore wants to eat when ever she's near Allison. But with me she can just hang out. This makes it a lot easer for me to play with Quinn and a lot tougher on Allison.

Also Allison has to breastfeed all the time. We ended up renting a breast pump so that I can throw in a bottle every once in a while and let Allison sleep. Breastfeeding Quinn all the time is a lot of work. Speaking of work, it's a lot harder to get milk out of a real human breast while a bottle is a lot easer. So when I bottle feed her, I'm know as "Easy Tits Ethan". We've had to watch it and use a slower-feed nipple so that Quinn prefer the bottle and make it even tougher on Allison.

I still think that "Stay at Home Fathers" have it a lot harder. It's not encouraged in a general sense. But my over all experience has mad me a lot less worried about the things I talked about in my old rant.

My Daughter Totoro

When my mom came out she brought her camera with her and she took this picture of Quinn. It's a very cute picture, I'm glad that she took it!

She's wearing a hat that we bought her. The hat is from the character Totoro from the film "My Neighbor Totoro". That's the film we chose to theme Quinn's room.

My mom has been taking a nude photography class in Boulder CO. She's quite good. I'll post the rest of her photos as soon as I get them.

My Daughter is in the 98th Percentile!

I want a bumper sticker that says: "My daughter is in the 95 percentile"

We had our next doctors appointment today. Her weight is 11 pounds-3 1/2 ounces and her length is 24 1/4 inches. For a baby her age she's really big and long, if you compare her to other babes her age she would be at the 98th percentile. I always knew that Quinn was above average!

Of course her head circumference is 37.8cm which is in the 75th percentile. So we're going to work on that head circumferences a bit. We can't have her lagging behind after all!

According to something I read on The Defective Yeti, none of this really matters. Just because she's long now, doesn't mean she'll be tall when she grows up. It just means she's long now.

So how does that compare to our last visit:

8-16-04
Weight: 9.10
Length: 22.18
Head: 36.03

9-8-04
Weight: 11.03.5
Length: 24.25
Head: 37.8

Over all the Doctor said she's doing quite well. She's putting on a lot of weight, she's growing steadily, so she said we must be doing everything right. The Doctor flipped Quinn over onto her belly and watched her hold her head up. Quinn is getting better at this every day. She seems to enjoy being on her belly, up to a limit, but she lets you know if she wants to be back on her back.

It's quite hot here, we've been letting Quinn have a lot of "Naked Time" where we strip her down and let her hang out. So far no accidents have happened.

Allison's Mom is here, she's a huge help, she's been watching Quinn at night, that allows Allison and I to get some sleep. It's going to be tough when she leaves, her help has been huge, and is very appreciated.

Happy 1 Month Birthday Quinn

Quinn is one month old today. She's doing really well for one month. She can really look at tings. She can see things from about two-three feet away. She loves looking at black and white pictures. She can't grasp things, but she does tend to reach her arms to the object that she is looking at. We played a game with her and a stuffed black and white rabbit. We'd put the rabbit in front of her and she would reach out and knock the rabbit down, then we’d set the rabbit up again and she’s swing again. It would usually take two or three swings to get it right, but she seemed to enjoy the game.

Quinn can smile, she does it quite frequently. I had one communication with her. I held the pacifier in front of her and she opened her mouth expectantly. She sleeps quite a lot for one month, we can get 4-6 hours of sleep out of her at night.

Today I think were are going to go to the mall to get out of the heat. At the mall we're going to buy her this black and white play-mat for her to lay in. It has these two arches that go over the top of her that have toys that dangle from them. The whole thing is black, whit and red. When we first saw it we thought it was ugly and ignored it. But with her fascination with the black and white cow we think she will like the play-mat a lot.
